DIN EN 13724 and its requirements
As we all know, there is a standard for everything in Germany. So it's no wonder that there is even a separate regulation for letterboxes. It is set out in DIN EN 13724. This European standard replaces the previously known German DIN 32617 standard. The main purpose of this standard is to recommend a size for both the letterbox itself and its insertion slot. According to DIN, the insertion slot should be at least 230 millimetres in size. If you frequently receive large letters, a size of 325 millimetres is recommended. C4 envelopes will then also fit in the letterbox.
Incidentally, this standard applies throughout Europe. The letterbox should also be theft-proof in accordance with the letterbox standard. This is ensured by a so-called anti-theft device behind the insertion slot. Letterboxes that comply with the European letterbox standard are therefore equipped in such a way that it is not easy to reach into the letterbox by hand. It is also recommended to lock the letterbox with a key. If it is a multi-part letterbox system, each party has its own key. This is a given with our stylish letterbox systems; you can order replacement keys at any time.
What are the quality and material requirements?
In addition to size, which is an essential part of the standard, it also specifies the material of a good letterbox. The material used should be such that the letterbox cannot be intentionally deformed or damaged. We at Briefkasten Manufaktur have therefore specialised in stainless steel letterboxes. Not only do they look elegant, they are also particularly durable and weather-resistant. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, but should be sprayed with a maintenance spray from time to time. In addition to the material, perfect quality also plays an important role. According to DIN, the letterbox must be designed in such a way that you cannot injure yourself when removing the mail. The letters themselves must also not be damaged. With our letterboxes from the most popular collections Brentano, Kant, Lessing, Goethe or Schiller , you can rely on this quality standard.
We have briefly summarised the most important requirements of DIN EN 13724 for you:
- Recommended insertion sizes: 325 - 400 millimetres (crosswise insertion), 230 - 280 millimetres (lengthwise insertion), insertion height 30 - 35 millimetres
- Resistant to corrosion in accordance with DIN EN 1670 and water ingress
- Burglar-proof thanks to high-quality materials and lock
- Installation height between 700 and 1700 millimetres
- Removal protection against unauthorised removal
All our letterboxes fulfil these recommendations and should therefore be your first choice.
What needs to be considered when choosing a location?
Once you have decided on a letterbox of impeccable quality in accordance with the aforementioned DIN standard, you need to find a suitable location. The most flexible option is to opt for a free-standing letterbox. You can either set it in concrete or screw it on. We offer free-standing letterboxes for apartment blocks that you can place in the hallway or in front of the house. When installing, make sure that the insertion slot is at an optimum height. It should be no higher than 170 centimetres above the ground. There are a few rules to follow, especially for letterbox systems for apartment blocks. In practice, it has proven to be a good idea to label the letterboxes according to the layout of the flats. This ensures that the postman can deliver the mail reliably and quickly. Of course, the nameplate must also be clearly legible. The lettering should be at least eight millimetres high so that it can be easily recognised.
